The Council is looking to appoint an additional Senior Planning  Officer or Planning Officer (depending on experience) to join our welcoming and progressive Policy team.

This role is suitable for someone that already has experience in working in planning policy and is interested in managing a mixed and varied portfolio of work through collaborative working, internally and externally across Norfolk.

We are currently preparing the new Local Plan which aims to maximise affordable housing delivery, secure sustainable, environmentally progressive development, deliver high quality built environment, whilst respecting and enhancing the District’s rural character, unique heritage and the Council’s climate change agenda.

It’s an exciting time to join North Norfolk. The Council has an advanced emerging Local Plan having undertaken Regulation 19 pre submission consultation and is looking to progress this to submission.

As an experienced planner you will take a lead role in developing, co-ordinating and defending areas of planning policy such as the Council’s 5YHLS, and act as expert witness for the Council at our Local Plan Examination. You will make a difference by taking ownership of formulating specific policy areas, and the commissioning and project management of associated evidence across a broad range of planning policy, including but not limited to assisting in the review of appropriate parts of the emerging spatial strategy/land allocations and housing related policies and update as necessary in light of emerging legislations and Council priorities.  We have ambitious plans for growth coming forward across the District and experience of bringing forward large-scale strategic extensions would be an advantage.  The role will also include providing support and advice to local communities when producing their Neighbourhood Plans ensuring their integration with the District’s Local Plan in order to produce an effective policy and implementation framework.

About You

Successful candidates will have a track record and be able to demonstrate practical experience and understanding of current & emerging issues affecting Planning Policy. As a Planning Officer or Senior you will be enthusiastic, self-motivated, whilst being able to work with minimal supervision in a team environment. You will also have excellent communication skills and be able to work to tight deadlines, whilst focussing on delivering good customer service and high-quality development and willing to learn and take on new challenges.  It will be your responsibility to present at internal officer and political briefings, formal Council meetings and at external meetings relating to the areas of work when required. In addition, you must have a degree in Town and Country Planning and be a member or be eligible for membership of the Royal Town Planning Institute.

In return, you will work in a friendly environment that offers the opportunity to work on a varied and interesting portfolio of work whilst having the opportunity to gain experience and develop your skills within a busy and diverse team of skilled and dedicated Officers. The Council offices are set up for hybrid working, with staff undertaking a mixture of office-based and home working.

We can offer you:

  • Golden Hello Payment of £5,000

We have an active health and well-being group with a new strategy, mental health first aiders, domestic abuse change champions, employee assistant program, and employee discounts portal.

We have a great forum for communication with regular updates from Directors and Chief Executive, employee voice through our Staff Focus Group, and great working relationship with Unison, our onsite recognised union.
